Freedom Income and Microcredit: Italian Government’s Best Practices at the United Nations

During the 69th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69), held in New York from 10 to 21 March 2025, UN Women presented the booklet “#16+1 Impact Stories for 16 Days.” This publication highlights effective practices that have positively impacted and improved access to services for women and girls who are victims of gender-based violence.

The Italian Government features prominently in this booklet, with the “Freedom Income” (Reddito di libertà) and “Freedom Microcredit” (Microcredito di libertà) initiatives recognised as exemplary practices on a global scale.

The Freedom Income, initially launched as a temporary measure in 2020, was made permanent by the Government in 2024 following a pilot phase. The monthly allowance was increased from the initial €400 to €500, provided for a duration of 12 months.

The Freedom Microcredit promotes greater economic independence through microcredit mechanisms, offering a combination of direct financial assistance, access to microloans, and the establishment of a support framework to address domestic violence via anti-violence centres and social services.

The objective of the booklet is to enhance international recognition of governmental commitments by documenting effective practices that contribute to combating violence against women and girls.
